Attending a total of five different schools, including home-school, Izabel Lopez (10) has been on the ride from school to school.

“This is the only high school [she has attended]. I’ve been home-schooled, and gone to Valley View Early College Campus, Dorothea Brown Middle School, and Sam Houston Elementary,” Lopez said.

After deciding that public school was not challenging, Lopez was compelled to be home-schooled for a year.

“Middle school was pretty easy, it was actually too easy, that’s why I started home-school so I could do it at my own pace and not have to wait for anyone,” Lopez said.

Being home-schooled, Lopez was introduced to a variety of teaching techniques.

“It was an online course, the teachers were online so I could just email her if I had any problems. They would then record themselves explaining it, so it was pretty easy,” Lopez said.

Her transition from home-school to a normal school impacted her daily routine. She now has homework daily and for every class. Unlike home-school and Valley View where she didn’t have any.

“Compared to home-school, they’re huge changes because class would just be three hours and I could do them at my preferred time,” Lopez said.

The modification from an isolated class to a class of 10, then to a class on nearly 30 students was tough on her.

“I’m still adjusting, it was hard to make new friends, but I know it’s going to take a while but I know it’ll get easier by next year,” Lopez said.

Lopez continues to challenge herself with advanced classes and keeping up with all the work. She manages to balance school with her daily life.

“I’m currently taking four advanced classes and right now I have all A’s. I study everyday for two hours,” Lopez said.

Lopez is just another normal girl struggling through high school. She’s currently taking AP World History, Pre-AP English, Math, and Chemistry.

Outside of school Lopez turns to painting. She’s never taken a class for it but she enjoys doing it when she isn’t doing school or homework.

“I love to paint, I don’t know if I do it well but I like doing it,” Lopez said.
