Practicum Education and Teaching (PET), is an ideal class for students who want to build a career around teaching.

In this program, every four days of the week, 14 students visit Escandon Elementary to assist a teacher.

Students are assigned a grade level based on their strongest subject.

Jaclyn Gutierrez (12), a PET student, assists a fourth grade English teacher.

Gutierrez helps students with spelling and grammatical errors, questions over their assignments, vocabulary and she’s even trained in first aid if an accident occurs.

“The good part about [this program] is you get to see these children grow, you learn a lot from who they are,” Gutierrez said.

However, not all students are perfect.

Students can be disrespectful and misbehave, it’s a reality.

Gutierrez says, “one of my friends [in this program] got cussed out by a second grader.”

But, Gutierrez’s experience has been an overwhelmingly positive one, she says she “feels like someone [the students] look up to.”

During second semester, the PET students are planning to assist Brown Middle School.

And at the end of year PET students will have the opportunity to earn a certification through an exam to become a substitute teacher.
