In the band hall, Emily Bellew (12), gathers her sheet music and gets ready for class to start.

Bellew has played the clarinet for 7 years.

“I joined the band in middle school,” Bellew said. “I picked the clarinet because when I would watch my sister play I remembered wanting to be as good as she was.”

On Jan 14, Bellew auditioned for the All-Region band at La Joya High School.

“My goal was to make it to state so as soon as I got the music I started practicing,” Bellew said. “I practiced as much as I could for as long as I could.”

The audition pieces included “Pas Redouble”, “Melodious Thunk”, “After the Thunderer”, “The Thunderer”, and  “Lauda”.

“The songs were extremely challenging,” Bewell said. “But, the idea of playing them with the whole group really kept me going.”

After her audition, Bellew found out she had made the All-Region band.

“I felt extremely happy and accomplished,” Bellew said. “I had worked, cried, sweated, and even bled a little during all that practice time and it finally paid off. I even got callouses on the inside of my mouth. It was so worth it.”

After graduation, Bellew plans to continue playing the clarinet.

“Even if I don’t make it into an ensemble in college I will always play,” Bellew said.

“My clarinet is part of me.”
